About the Role
Mentors are the heart of Compass. As a Mentor, you will build a 1:1 near-peer relationship with a high school Scholar, supporting their academic growth, personal development, and preparation for life after high school. This is a unique opportunity to make a direct impact on the life of a rural student while also gaining valuable leadership and coaching experience yourself.

  • Support your Scholar in academics, college applications, career exploration, and personal growth

  • Collaborate with Compass staff and Cohort Leads to ensure your Scholar’s needs are met

  • Attend Compass mentor orientation and regular check-ins

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff

  • Reliable and able to attend required meetings and events

Desired Skills

  • Experience with mentoring, tutoring, or youth leadership

  • Organizational or event-planning skills

  • Public speaking or facilitation experience

  • Familiarity with college application, financial aid, or post-secondary routes (college, technical, or vocational schooling)

  • Empathy, patience, and a passion for supporting student success

Commitment & Support

  • Anticipated start date: between December 22, 2025 and January 12, 2026

  • ~5 hours/month (some heavier, some lighter weeks)

  • 5 semesters, following your student through their duration in the program

  • Remote availability to your Scholar

  • Orientation and regular check-ins provided

Compensation & Benefits

This is a volunteer position, offered as a service and leadership opportunity. While financial compensation is not provided, Mentors gain:

  • Impact: The chance to change a rural student’s life trajectory through consistent guidance and support

  • Leadership Development: Build tangible skills in coaching, communication, and mentorship that translate to any career path

  • Professional Growth: Experience in education, service, and leadership that strengthens graduate school or career applications
